Vor seiner Berufung zum Professor of Banking and Finance an der Frankfurt School of Finance and Management im Sommer 2012, hielt Michael Koetter den Lehrstuhl für Internationale Finanz- und Monetärökonomie an der Universität Groningen inne. Er erhielt seinen PhD der Volkswirtschaftslehre von der Universität Utrecht und den MSc von der Universität Maastricht. Er war ebenfalls für die Boston Consulting Group und im Forschungszentrum der Deutschen Bundesbank tätig. Aktuelle Forschungsschwerpunkte betreffen empirische Studien im Bankwesen, zum Beispiel zu den Themen Fehlanreize, systemische Risiken und internationales Bankwesen. Seine Forschung wurde durch die Niederländische Forschungsgesellschaft (NWO) gefördert und wird regelmäßig in international begutachteten Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht, zum Beispiel im Review of Economics and Statistics, The Review of Financial Studies, und anderen.
