Student Life in Frankfurt
Cost of Living
Germany is relatively inexpensive in comparison to many other European countries, such as France, the UK, or the Netherlands. Food and leisure activities are all in line with the EU average. According to one country-wide survey, student expenses averaged between 600-770 euros per month. As one of the most important European cities for banking and finance, Frankfurt prices are generally slightly higher than most other German cities.
Part-Time Jobs
According to DAAD, foreign students from oustide of the EEA and Switzerland, are generally allowed to work the equivalent hours of 90 full work days, or 180 part-time days. Any work beyond this must be approved by authorities; however, there is an exception to the limit for student jobs related to higher education.
There are some opportunities for part-time student assistant positions offered by the administration and certain professors at Frankfurt School. Please check with the International Student Advisory office for more information.
Health Insurance
Students who study in Germany must have health insurance coverage. International students from outside of the EU will generally be required to obtain health insurance from the public health insurance system, Gesetzliche Krankenversicherun, or through a private German provider. The public option is generally less expensive, and currently amounts to about 55 euros per month. Public health coverage includes most treatment costs, though small fees are levied on prescription drugs, and in-patient treatment. A medical consultation fee of 10 euros is also applicable once per quarter for visits to the doctor or dentist.
