Jackstädt Best Paper Award 2010
The China Economic Quarterly 2008-2009 (Volume 8)Dr. Werner Jackstädt Best Paper Award for Chinese Economic and Business Studies goes to Income, Con-
sumption and Saving Behavior of Chinese Urban Households: A Cohort Analysis, published in Volume 8, No. 4, co-authored by Shaojie Zhou (School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University), Junsen Zhang (Department of Economics, the Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Hongbin Li (School of Eco-
nomics and Management, Tsinghua University).
The paper uses the Chinese Urban Household Survey data to conduct a cohort analysis on household saving behavior. It finds the uniqueness of saving behavior of Chinese urban residents and explains its pattern from two aspects. First, household consumption growth is less than household income. Second, the high saving pro-
pensity of young cohorts and their increasing proportion in each year's sample also contribute to the increasing saving rate over years. The paper meets the high stand-
ards of applied research as well as contributing to the understanding of household savings in China.
