The Future of Banking and Finance in China - Prospects and Challenges

Frankfurt am Main, 28.09.2010 - Conference jointly hosted by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and Frankfurt School

The economic centre of the world is shifting from West to East since China started its reform and opening-up policies in the late 1970s. The recent financial and economic crisis has accelerated the momentum of this process.

In accordance with this development of historical dimension, China has decided to develop Shanghai into an international financial centre by 2020. This decision has to be considered as a blueprint for the further transformation of China’s financial industry towards a market system. It includes the internationalization of the Chinese currency, the continuing reform and opening-up of China’s banking sector, and last but not least the upgrading of China’s money and capital markets.

The conference aims to intensify knowledge exchange and collaboration between the Chinese and the European banking and finance communities about the ongoing changes of China’s financial system. It will bring together leading academics and decision-makers from the industry, as well as regulators from China and Europe, who will discuss the evolution and future of China’s banking and finance sector and its integration in the global financial markets against the background of the European ex-
perience. Thus, it will provide a discussion platform for researchers, banking execu-
tives, media representatives and the interested public to exchange views on the issue.

The leading questions of the conference are:

- What is the future of China’s banking industry?
- What lessons can be learned from the financial crisis by Chinese and European
  regulatory authorities?
- Which steps have to be undertaken to establish Shanghai as an international  financial centre?

The conference is co-hosted by FrankfurtRhineMain GmbH International Marketing of the Region and supported by The Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), Deutsche Börse Group, Frankfurt Main Finance e. V., Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and the EU-China Business Management Training Project (BMT).
