Crypto Assets

Bitcoin, Smart Contract Platforms like Ethereum, and Decentralised Finance (DeFi)

Contents

Crypto assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many others use public ledgers shared over the internet to prove ownership of digital assets. They can be transferred in seconds without the need for intermediaries or permission from any centralised authority, making them an important component of financial infrastructure. While some might argue there is a cloud of hype obscuring potential use cases of such assets, they provide an indisputable potential for innovation. This is for example proven by 40 million European citizens (according to the European Central Bank) and 40 million US citizens (according to the White House) that already now own crypto assets. Based on smart contract platforms like Ethereum, assets such as traditional currencies (i.e., stablecoins) or financial instruments (e.g., shares, debt) can be tokenised.

This programme aims to introduce participants to the underlying technical mechanics of crypto assets, their potential for asset management and financial portfolios, potential use cases for finance and businesses, as well as aspects of web3 and the metaverse. Furthermore, this seminar will deepen participants' understanding of the two top-tier crypto assets, Bitcoin and Ethereum, and their underlying protocols from a technical, economical, political, and social perspective.

This seminar is organised in collaboration with the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center (FSBC). The FSBC is a think tank and research center focused primarily on investigating the implications of blockchain technology. In addition to general research and prototype development, the FSBC serves as a networking hub for managers, start-ups, and experts to exchange knowledge and best practices.

Learning Target

In this seminar, you will learn how crypto assets work, why many consider them to be such an important technological achievement, the societal and political significance of decentralised assets, and how it all works under the hood. Furthermore, we will cover smart contract platforms, such as Ethereum, and all that they enable such as the deployment of tokens (including NFTs), as well as decentralised applications and their first major use case - decentralised finance (DeFi). This seminar is designed to rapidly bring you up to speed on blockchain, crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, and smart contracts so that by the end of the day you have a solid understanding of the benefits of these new technologies, their use cases, and their potential impact, as well as the general concepts of decentralisation, trust, immutability, and consensus. During this seminar, we will be prioritising institutional considerations, such as asset custody, use cases, etc.

Methodology

Considering the potential disruptive importance of crypto assets, web3, and the metaverse, this course aims to cut through the hype and help you understand these arguably abstract topics in simple terms. We will begin with a basic look at Bitcoins’ implementation of the first ever Blockchain, all the way to today's diverse multichain, multipurpose decentralised ledger ecosystem. This seminar is designed to be easy to follow for beginners in the areas of crypto assets, while also quickly moving on to more advanced topics. Mathematical topics such as cryptography are excluded. This module integrates quantitative and qualitative aspects of blockchain technology, crypto assets, and their economics. It thereby also builds on the innovation strategy that allows the development of new innovative products and services stemming from distributed ledger technologies that will be an important topic for the future development of companies and the growth of industries.
