Overview

In this Master of Finance concentration students are not only exposed to the numbers and accounting behind financial transactions such as in M&A, but are challenged to go a step further and use this knowledge in decision-making and financial advisory through case studies and projects which typically include guest speakers from external firms. Students will gain hands-on experience through an applied advisory project in which they are working on a real life case given by one of our corporate partners.

Modules

M&A Accounting

In this course you look at the significance of different types of M&A transactions for companies, discuss the validity of different strategies and their consequences for the firm’s value. The module explains the process involved in acquiring subsidiaries into parent companies, applies the accounting concept of goodwill and its treatment in subsequent reporting periods, and covers the financial reporting effects of investments in joint ventures.

Restructuring & Strategic Management Control

The module aims at analyzing firms in financial distress and developing solutions to improve profitability. The class also contributes to acquiring theoretical knowledge and practical applications about how financial and non-financial information is used in strategic and operational decision-making in turnarounds.

Advisory Project

Is the capstone module of this concentration and its divided into two parts. The first introduces the consulting business and provides practical knowledge such as how to successfully pitch and manage projects. The second part is a consulting challenge: You will learn about a real business case by one of our corporate partners. You will be asked to develop a proposal under time constraints and pitch the idea to the senior managers at the end. Current alumni working in consulting will advise the students throughout the case.

Corporate Valuation

This course focuses on the valuation of equity securities. The techniques consist of preparing pro-forma financial statements, forecasting of free cash flows, application of valuation models, and understanding market-multiple valuation approaches. It emphasizes the role of financial statement data in equity valuation, using advanced cases from and around actual financial statements.

Financial Information & Decision-Making

The module is divided into three parts, starting with the discussion of financial reporting quality followed by the decision-making uses of financial information and at the end students will take part in a workshop where they will write algorithms in STATA. Overall you are able to use tools which measure financial reporting quality and evaluate how it affects decision-making on e.g. equity and debt markets, as well as in compensation contracts.
