Assistant Professor of Computational Science

Lucas Böttcher is an Assistant Professor for Computational Science at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

Lucas received his PhD in applied mathematics and computational physics from ETH Zürich in 2018. Prior to his appointment at the Frankfurt School, he worked as a Lecturer at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at ETH Zürich where he taught courses on Computational and Statistical Physics. In 2020, he joined the Departments of Computational Medicine and Mathematics at UCLA as a research scientist and fellow of the Swiss National Fund. Lucas has also worked in the private sector as a computational scientist in the Digital Solutions Group of the Leoni AG, a leading wire and cable manufacturer.

His research utilizes and develops advanced computational and analytical methods to address applied problems. He is also interested in addressing fundamental questions in applied and computational mathematics, statistical mechanics, and machine learning. In his current research work, Lucas focuses on modeling and control of high-dimensional stochastic processes and dynamical systems, developing network analysis methods, and developing data assimilation approaches to combine mechanistic models and empirical data.

His research has been recognized by major media outlets and stations, including the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Harvard Business Review, Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Collection of the American Physical Society, ETH, UCLA and Caltech news, and KPCC’s AirTalk with Larry Mantle. My work on international student mobility has been mentioned in a policy report by the European Parliament, and I have also contributed to addressing the drug overdose epidemic, which has been highlighted in the UN World Drug Report 2024.

He is member of the editorial boards of Nonlinear Dynamics and of the International Journal of Modern Physics C.
