Associate Professor of Operations and Technology Management
Jochen Schlapp is an associate professor of Operations and Technology Management and academic director of the BSc program in Computational Business Analytics at Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.
Prof. Schlapp’s research revolves around the efficient design of R&D and new product and service development processes as well as the interplay between new technologies and operations strategy. In his recent work, he studies incentive issues that emerge in firms’ quest to scout promising external innovation projects, and he analyzes the R&D portfolio implications for firms that simultaneously rely on both internal and external innovation. He also strives to build a broader awareness for the benefits of using contest mechanisms in the procurement of innovative goods. Prof. Schlapp’s research has been published in leading academic journals such as Management Science, Operations Research, and Manufacturing & Service Operations Management and has received various research awards.
Prof. Schlapp has developed and delivered executive education programs around business development through innovation and operations strategy for companies in the automotive, ICT, food, and process industries. At Frankfurt School, he teaches Innovation Management, New Product Development, and Operations Strategy in the school’s EMBA, MBA, and MSc programs. He is also a frequent speaker at practitioner workshops.
Prof. Schlapp currently serves as an elected board member for the INFORMS Technology, Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship Section. For his service to the academic community, he has repeatedly received the Management Science Distinguished Service Award and the M&SOM Meritorious Service Award.
