The classes take place every Wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM (German time). Attendance is mandatory.

Course Outline

Session 1

Agricultural Finance Landscape

This module introduces participants to the agricultural finance ecosystem and the unique characteristics of agricultural lending.

Participants explore how agricultural value chains function, identify key actors, and understand the specific role of credit officers within rural and agricultural finance systems. The session builds a foundation for understanding why agricultural lending differs from traditional SME or consumer lending.

Session 2

Understanding Farmers

This module focuses on farmers as economic decision-makers. Participants learn how behavioural factors, household dynamics, and risk perceptions influence farmers’ financial decisions.

The session strengthens interviewing skills and equips participants to identify red flags, assess credibility, and build trust while collecting reliable information from agricultural clients.

Session 3

Farm Economics

This module develops participants’ understanding of farm-level economics. It covers production cycles, yield determination, cost structures, and seasonality across crops and livestock systems.

Participants learn to build simple farm budgets and calendars that form the basis for sound cash flow and credit analysis.

Session 4

Market Analysis

This module examines agricultural markets and price formation. Participants analyse market structures, buyer relationships, price volatility, and demand-supply dynamics.

The session equips credit officers to assess market risks and evaluate how market access and price fluctuations affect farmers’ repayment capacity.

Session 5

Cash Flow Analysis

This module strengthens participants’ ability to develop and analyse farm and household cash flows.

Emphasis is placed on seasonality, timing of inflows and outflows, and repayment capacity assessment. Participants also learn to apply sensitivity and stress testing to evaluate resilience under adverse scenarios.

Session 6

Farm Visits

This module focuses on effective farm visits as a core credit assessment tool.

Participants learn how to observe production conditions, verify information, use digital and remote verification tools, and document findings systematically. The session reinforces practical risk identification during on-site and virtual visits.

Session 7

Credit Appraisal

This module integrates technical, financial, and qualitative analysis into a structured agricultural credit appraisal.

Participants apply the 5 Cs of credit in an agricultural context and practice scoring and decision-making using realistic case scenarios. The module emphasizes consistency, fairness, and risk awareness.

Session 8

Loan Monitoring

This module focuses on post-disbursement loan monitoring and delinquency management.

Participants learn to identify early warning signs, diagnose causes of repayment problems, and apply ethical restructuring and recovery approaches while maintaining client relationships.

Session 9

Product Development

This module introduces principles of agricultural loan product design.

Participants learn how to align loan terms, repayment schedules, and pricing with agricultural production cycles and client needs. The session encourages innovation while maintaining portfolio quality and institutional sustainability.

Session 10

Credit Cycle Management

This module covers risk management across the full agricultural credit cycle.

Participants identify production, market, climatic, and policy risks and apply mitigation strategies at different credit stages. The session emphasizes proactive documentation and risk-forward loan file management.

Session 11

Portfolio Management

This module builds participants’ capacity to manage agricultural credit portfolios.

Key topics include portfolio quality indicators, PAR analysis, concentration risks, and monitoring tools. Participants learn how individual loan decisions translate into portfolio-level performance.

Session 12

Recap and Integration

This final module consolidates learning across all sessions.

For this online seminar, participants will need:
