Our Mission

The Frankfurt School Blockchain Center is a think tank and research center which investigates implications of the blockchain technology for companies and their business models. Besides the development of prototypes, it serves as a platform for managers, start-ups, technology and industry experts to share knowledge and best practices. The Blockchain Center also provides new research impulses and develops trainings for students and executives. It focuses on banking, mobility, “Industrie 4.0” and the energy sector.

Foster understanding of blockchain technology and their business potential for a variety of stakeholders.

Generate new knowledge about commercial, managerial and societal implications of blockchain technologies.

Seminar "Taxation of crypto currencies and tokens" on August 21, 2018 in Munich: Investors in crypto assets made high profits in the last year and experts estimate the number of Bitcoin owners in Germany at approximately 800,000, including numerous legal entities. However, the taxation of profits from crypto currency remains a complicated issue. That is why the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center is organizing a seminar on this topic. Leading tax experts for crypto currencies will explain the taxation of Bitcoin and other crypto assets in detail, so that tax consultants can also advise their clients in the best possible way.

Workshop "R3 Corda: Conceptual and Technical Aspects for Enterprise Blockchain/DLT System" on August 30 to 31, 2018 in Frankfurt: Corda is a blockchain-inspired open source distributed ledger platform specialized for the use within regulated financial institutes, as it doesn't have the design flaws that make blockchains inappropriate for many financial scenarios. Co-organized together with Micobo, during this 2-day workshop participants will acquire knowledge on the conceptual aspects of Corda, including security, network design, key elements of the Corda's architecture, as well as an understanding of how to develop and deploy CorDapps.

Workshop "Open Blockchains: Hands-on Workshop" on September 12, 2018, in Frankfurt: The event aims to provide an interactive view of the fundamental concepts of the public blockchains with a focus on the largest public blockchains: Bitcoin and Ethereum. Besides the theoretical overview, participants will get hands-on experience and see how the learned concepts can be applied.

Course "Blockchain Developer Programme: Ethereum and Hyperledger" from September 17 to 21, 2018, in Frankfurt: Designed for programmers, this course covers the development of Blockchain projects using the Ethereum and the Hyperledger platforms. From an implementation perspective, it includes writing smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps). Participants will also obtain an understanding of the variety of possible Blockchain use cases and business models.

Conference "How Blockchain and FinTech Will Change the Financial Ecosystem" on September 20, 2018 in Frankfurt: The blockchain technology continues disrupting current business processes across different industries. In a joint effort to shed light on this topic, S&P Global and the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center are organizing a one-day event where thought leaders in FinTech, blockchain, crypto assets and ICOs will gather to discuss the ongoing development and the implications of this technology for the financial ecosystem.

Course "Certified Blockchain Expert" from October 24, 2018 to January 21, 2019 in Frankfurt: This course is designed for everybody who wants to acquire IT and business skills in blockchain technology. The course has an IT track and a business track such that it is suitable for both IT experts and business developers who seek to understand blockchain technology and crypto currencies. Among others, we focus on the Ethereum and the Hyperledger platforms. From an IT perspective, this includes writing smart contracts and decentralised applications (DApps). Further, from a business perspective, we provide an understanding of the variety of possible blockchain use cases and business models. The program consists of two 4-day weeks and a final term paper.

Conference "East-West Crypto Conference" on October 22 and 23, 2018, in Frankfurt: The event is jointly organized by the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center, DTL Capital, and Black Arrow Conferences with the aim of bringing closer the Asian and the European crypto scene. Seasoned speakers, thought-leader, and regulatory authorities that are active in the blockchain field, are gathering to discuss best practices, current knowledge, and trends of already funded businesses in both continents.

Conference "Blockchain Startup Summit 2018" on November 15, 2018, in Frankfurt: Aiming to energize the blockchain ecosystem in Europe, the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center and organize a one-day conference. The event is the ideal platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and investors who want to devise and propel their blockchain company. It includes panel discussions, talks by seasoned speakers, presentations by startups in the blockchain field and a pitch battle where the hottest European-based blockchain startup will win a prize package.

The Blockchain Bundesverband (Blockchain Association Germany) promotes the use of blockchain technology at the business location Germany. The association represents interests of startups and companies that want to develop business models based on blockchain technology. The Frankfurt School Blockchain Center is a founding member.

IOTA is being built for serving as the backbone of the new autonomous machine economy. The tangle ledger is able to settle transactions with zero fees so that devices can trade exact amounts of resources on-demand. Frankfurt School Blockchain Center is a participant of IOTA‘s Data Marketplace.

MAMA is a trade body which represents asset management companies, investors, technology providers, service providers and ecosystem players interested in working towards a new vision for asset management using blockchain and other supporting decentralized technologies. The Frankfurt School Blockchain Center is a founding member.

Proof of concept on trading loans using Ethereum

While many different institutions work on the settlement part of trading financial instruments, few have looked into the advantages Blockchain can offer for trading of loans.

In a proof of concept we show the following advantages:

  • Easier bondholder communication while keeping holders anonymous
  • Anonymous BWICs and AWICs while trust is established through distribution using the technology layer
  • Smart contracts enable the inclusion of fiat currencies into the transaction flow
