Das Frankfurt School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance ist eine strategische Kooperation zwischen der Frankfurt School und dem Umweltprogramm der Vereinten Nationen (UNEP). Das FS-UNEP Centre hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Finanzakteuren im Rahmen strategischer Beratungsleistungen transformative Veränderungen zu fördern und dabei innovative, intelligente und praxisnahe Lösungen zu entwickeln. Das Centre verfolgt einen einzigartigen Ansatz, indem es Forschung und Praxiserfahrung miteinander verbindet, um die Finanzierung des Übergangs zu einer grüneren, klimaresilienten Zukunft zu ermöglichen, in der Gesellschaften nachhaltig gedeihen können.
Klima- und nachhaltige Energiefinanzierung ist ein zunehmend wichtiges, fachübergreifendes Thema, das häufig Synergien mit unseren anderen Kernthemen aufweist. Daher unterstützen wir Finanzinstitute weltweit bei der Umsetzung einer breiten Palette von Aktivitäten – aufbauend auf unserer bestehenden Expertise in anderen thematischen Bereichen.
Core Expertise
Climate Adaptation Finance
Working with public and private sector actors, we provide solutions for the management of climate and environment-related risks through national frameworks and policies as well as institutional strategies, operations and products. We work to develop new or adjusted financial services or products that facilitate climate adaptation and the strengthening of long-term resilience. For residual risks, the risk-layered approach is applied, including insurance solutions and disaster risk management provisions.
Climate Mitigation Finance
We partner with public and private financial sector players to strategically plan for and operationally implement finance that promotes climate mitigation and encourages public and private sectors to invest in sustainable technologies that promote energy, water and material efficiency solutions as well as the generation of renewable energy.
Circular Economy & Cleaner Production Finance
We work with public and private actors to identify finance-related challenges and possible solutions in achieving the transition to cleaner production and a circular economy. We adopt a systemic perspective in our approach, paying close attention to broader framework conditions, including regulatory, and the build-up of intelligence, knowledge and awareness of the specific characteristics of circularity.
Biodiversity Conservation & Nature Finance
Through scientific and applied research and institutional and staff capacity building, we support our clients in assessment and management of nature-related risks and opportunities, mainstream nature protection and nature-positive actions in the lending and investment decisions of financial institutions and other financial sector stakeholders..
Our Frankfurt School Certified Expert in Biodiversity Finance course enables financial sector stakeholders to get an introduction risks associated with biodiversity loss as well as knowledge and tools needed to support the preservation of Earth's diverse ecosystems as financial actors.
Inclusive & Green Transition Finance
Jointly with our clients, we strategically plan for and implement changes for directing capital in ways that support environmental sustainability while ensuring fair social outcomes. This is supported by inclusive green transition plans and the mobilization of capital toward sustainable projects, the design of responsive financial products, integrating ESG and climate/environmental risk into lending, investment, and insurance decisions as well as expanding financial inclusion by improving access to credit, savings, and insurance for marginalized populations. Through blending public and private finance, we define solutions to de-risk sustainable investments and engage with clients and stakeholders to encourage sustainable business practices. Building capacities in measuring and reporting impact increases transparency and accountability on environmental and social outcomes.

We work closely with municipalities in planning for and developing financing solutions to transform cities into sustainable places. We adopt a comprehensive approach to enhancing municipalities’ access to finance while identifying opportunities and risks in investment areas related to sustainable urban planning including energy efficiency, renewable energy, nature-based solutions as well as circular economy principles.
