10 Years of the Master of Leadership in Sustainable Finance

In 2016, Frankfurt School of Finance & Management launched its first fully online Master’s programme: the Master of Leadership in Development Finance. Ten years later, the programme – now known as the Master of Leadership in Sustainable Finance – has grown into a globally recognised degree, educating professionals who shape sustainable finance and development worldwide.
From an Idea to Frankfurt School’s First Online Master’s Programme
The idea emerged to combine the existing Certified Expert courses into a full Master’s programme, allowing participants who had already completed two or three courses to upgrade their qualifications to a Master’s level. These courses, as well as the Master programme, address a clear gap in higher and applied education in development finance across several regions.
The programme was specifically developed to meet the needs of professionals working in development finance, while fully leveraging the advantages of an online learning format. Students were able to continue their careers without interruption and did not need to relocate internationally, manage visa requirements, or leave their families to pursue further education.
The first cohort began in 2016 and was an immediate success, launching with more than 20 students. Since then, the programme has grown steadily, with the most recent cohort in 2025 welcoming more than 60 students.
Expanding the focus: From development to sustainable finance
As global awareness of sustainability challenges increased, so did the scope of the programme. The evolving finance landscape made clear that sustainability considerations needed to be further embedded in the curriculum.
The programme was therefore expanded to include two distinct tracks: Development Finance and Green Finance. The Green Finance track focuses on financing the transition to a low-carbon economy, while the Development Finance track addresses topics such as financial inclusion, economic growth and inclusive financial systems. Reflecting this broader orientation, the programme was renamed Master of Leadership in Sustainable Finance in 2020.
Standing out in a growing online education landscape
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated the global shift towards online education. As acceptance of digital learning formats increased, so did competition in the market.
Throughout this transformation, Frankfurt School’s Master of Leadership in Sustainable Finance has maintained a strong position. Its continued success is rooted in its combination of academic rigour and immediately applicable content at an executive level, its flexibility for professionals balancing career and personal commitments, and the close, individualised support provided throughout the entire study journey, from advisory services to thesis supervision.
A global network of impact
Today, with more than 200 graduates, the programme is supported by a growing and vibrant alumni network. Frankfurt School is proud of its students and alumni – of their professional achievements, their personal development and the measurable impact they generate across the global finance and sustainability landscape.
To mark the occasion, Frankfurt School will introduce a Sustainability Impact Award, recognising a graduate whose work has generated outstanding impact following completion of the programme. Further details will be announced soon.
