Bundesbank Professor speaking in front of an audience

Frankfurt am Main, 24.01.2023 12:00:00

Some 30 Master of Financial Law and EBI-Master in EU Banking & Financial Regulation LLM students and alumni met on 13 January for their first cross-programme LLM networking event at Frankfurt School.

The event, developed by Frankfurt School’s LLM programme managers Dr Elisabeth Radek and Sandra Varky, centred around a keynote speech followed by a discussion. The event’s guest speake, Professor Dr Urs Lendermann from Deutsche Bundesbank, University of Applied Sciences, held a keynote titled “European Green Bonds – Fade to Grey” on the rapidly developing European green bond market.

One of Professor Lendermann’s key messages: The “Greenium” – a yield spread between green and conventional bonds – exits, with green bonds yielding a few basis points lower than their non-green peers. This means that green financing does affect, and in fact reduce, the cost of capital. And these lower financing costs for green bonds in turn might create incentives for the development of additional green projects.

As expected, the topic triggered a lively discussion about how markets could improve the fight against climate change, shareholderism versus stakeholderism and green Bonds versus grey bonds. The discussion even continued at the get-together with snacks & drinks, which was closing the event in Frankfurt School’s Campus Lounge
